Outdoor-Continued
Care
Frequency
of watering will depend on the size, location and plant material
used. Generally, follow the directions for the specific plant material.
Soaking 1-2 times per week by completely submersing in water is
recommended. Use a bucket, garbage can, storage bin, bath tub/shower,
sink or soak with the garden hose. Just misting is not sufficient,
it is very important to water the center of the form. Note that
most stuffed topiaries die from under-watering, not over-watering.
Fertilizing 1-2 times a month is also recommended. Use a liquid
fertilizer that has been added to the soaking water. As your plant
grows, pin the runners to fill in any bare areas. When the form
is completely covered you can trim with a scissors to maintain the
shape and appearance that you desire. If you want to move your form
indoors in the harsher climates, treat it like any other houseplant
and administer care according to specific plant materials used.
If it is necessary to treat the plant for insect infestation before
bringing indoors, spray with a solution of 1 tablespoon of vegetable
oil, 1 teaspoon of mild liquid dish detergent and 1 quart of water.
This should remove any insects that might in living in or on the
form. If you are leaving the plant outdoors in a harsh climate,
remove any plant material and move the form to a dry location. In
the spring, re-wet the form by soaking in water, repair any exposed
wire with more moss and replant.
